Startups Grail Inc. and Freenome Inc. — symbols of how machine learning, artificial intelligence and other high-profile tech tools are shaping the life sciences — collectively raised a record $1 billion toward the goal of early detecting of cancer from a simple blood draw.
Grail, based in Menlo Park, corralled $900 million in what is the largest biotech fund-raising round ever in life sciences. Meanwhile, South San Francisco-based Freenome said it snagged $65 million.
