The state Department of Public Health has put a pause on UMass Memorial Health Care’s plans to cut the number of psychiatric beds at its University campus in half, saying the beds are necessary for the region.
In a letter issued April 14, the Department of Public Health called into question UMass’ plans to eliminate 13 inpatient psychiatric beds. The hospital announced in early March that it was in dire need of medical/surgical beds, and would shift the psychiatric beds into medical ones.
